Just watched the first seven episodes of South Park's season seven. I think it's one of the most political, social and media critic institutions in popular culture. Matt and Trey are really good at pointing out things going wrong, without being as much "in your face" as e.g. Michael Moore. There is nothing like sane opinions expressed insanely with construction paper. (Actually they use Maya, cause that's quicker and cheaper than construction paper…)

Hydra

Around christmas last year I sat together with some friends (fellow computer science students) thinking about what we could do as a freetime coding project to learn the inner magics of Cocoa, earn a little recognition in the macintosh community and (at this point certainly unrealistical) win some awards.

One thing was for sure: I'd had to be Rendezvous enabled. I cannot really remember if any of us was the first to have the idea of writing a collaborative texteditor, or if the idea grew, erm..., collaboratively. Working in a way too small office™, we were quite sick of digging through furniture to reach the other side of the room in order to work together on some code.

Obeying Larry Wall's law of being a programmer (The three virtues of a programmer are: laziness, impatience and hybris.) we decided to create a source code editor that would enable us to work together, without getting up and falling over chairs.

After reading papers on collaborative editing we started working on February, 3rd. In this stage of the project the editor was still codenamed XXP or X²P, meaning extreme Extreme Programming, a pun on the fact that we wanted to do multiple input foci. By the end of february we came up with "Hydra" and the claim "Seven brains are ~~tastier~~ smarter than one."

After on-schedule (woohoo!) release on 31.03.03 we were quite amazed by the feedback we got: Users from all around the world wrote emails, Hydra got featured on Slashdot, O'Reilly and last but not least on Apple's Mac OS X downloads website, just right to Warcraft III. <grin>

Grep'ing through hydra.globalse.org's referer_log and looking what people are blogging/writing about Hydra is fun and deeply satisfying. I think we really couldn't have asked for any better experience with our first real world software project.

In related news, Hydra 1.0.1, a minor bugfix and localization version is due for next Tuesday, while Hydra 1.1 is scheduled for a mid-june release.

I am lazy.
I was thinking about migrating this to blosxom. However I haven't had enough time and motivation (see 1.). Furthermore I think I would miss the comfort of antville.

As of now the official language is Denglish. Posts interessting to international users will be posted in english, while other works (e.g. short stories like God's own television network) will be written in german due to a lack of witty, near-native english writing skills.

Sieben Ex-Mitarbeiter von Microsoft, heute Millionäre und Frührentner werden interviewt und im Alltag begleitet:

Trish Millines Dziko
Hat bis zu ihrem Ausstieg als "Sr. Diversity Administrator" gearbeitet. War somit also damit betraut Microsoft offener für afro-amerikanische Mitarbeiter zu machen.
Sie kündigte weil sie glaubte nichts für die Gleichberechtigung innerhalb Microsofts tun zu können und das Gefühl hatte, es würde nur geredet und nicht gehandelt.
Heute leitet sie die Technology Access Foundation, die es sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, schwarzen Jungendlichen Zugang und Ausbildung zu und an Computern (Apple Macintoshs) zu verschaffen.
Sie wirkt müde und ausgebrannt. Das Geld ermöglicht es ihr für ihre Sache zu kämpfen während ihre Arbeit ihr den Glauben an ihre Sache genommen hat.

Marlin Eller
Er arbeitete an Dos, Windows, Excel und Microsofts ersten (kläglich gescheiterten) Versuch in Sachen Pen Computing. Er kündigte als seine Beziehung zu seinem Arbeitgeber immer "zerrütteter" wurde.
Seine 2.7 Mio. Dollar Aktienoptionen investierte er in eine Firma die Notenblätter über das Internet verkaufen sollte. 1999 ging er Pleite. Außerdem ist er Author von "Barbarians led by Bill Gates", einer etwas bitteren aber lesenswerten Abrechung mit seinem Ex-Arbeitgeber. Man merkt, er hat immernoch Hass auf Bill und seine Firma, fühlt sich unverstanden und schlecht behandelt. Es fällt auf: Er trägt nicht so schwer am Verlust seines Geldes, wie die anderen am Besitz des Ihren.

Bill Barnes
War bis zu seiner Kündigung "Program Manager" von Microsofts Onlinemagazin Slate. Ist heute zur Macintosh Platform zurückgekehrt und verarbeitet sein Privatleben zu Comics. Er scheint rechtzeitig ausgestiegen zu sein: Im Vergleich zu den anderen wirkt er unverbraucht. Sein Frührenter-Dasein zwingt ihn dazu sich unentwegt zu beschäftigen, vielleicht auch, um sich nicht nutzlos zu fühlen.

Penny und David Atcheson
Haben bei MS an der Dokumentation gearbeitet, sich dort kennengelernt und geheiratet. Er kompensiert seinen Zeitüberfluß mit Engagement für den lokalen Umweltschutz, sie mit der gemeinsamen Tochter Koki. Irgendwie wirkt der "heile-Welt-Zuckerguss" über ihrem gemeinsamen Leben sehr dünn.

Walt Moore und Chuck Whitmer
Walt Moore war verantwortlich für die Grafiktreiber von Windows 1.0, 2.x und OS/2. Er wurde gegangen, weil er "Programmers Block" hatte, keinen vernüftigen Code mehr zustande brachte. Sein bester (und einziger) Freund ist Chuck Whitmer, sein ehemaliger Chef. Während der Dreharbeiten zieht Walt von einem Haus am Berg in Redmond in ein Haus am See um. Warum, weiss er nicht genau, es sei das erste Mal, dass er wirklich etwas von dem Geld ausgebe, das ihm MS gezahlt hat.
Walt schreibt Chuck eine Email, er solle mal vorbeischauen, in seinem neuen Haus. Chuck kommt und gemeinsam sitzen sie im noch leeren Wohnzimmer und sinnieren über ihre Vergangenheit.

Walt zeigt uns sein neues Haus: 4 Schlafzimmer und 20 Andere. Walt erklärt, eigentlich brauche er nur eins, sein Computerzimmer. Walt ist ein typischer Geek. Am Ende des Rundgang wird Walt in seiner Küche gefragt, wer in dem Haus leben wird. "Just me", antwortet er.

Sein Gesichtsausdruck zeigt, dass er Angst hat vor der nächsten Frage, sich wünscht sie würde nicht gestellt. Die Reporterin tut es trotzdem: Ob er eine Famile, haben wolle, Kinder? Walt erwidert, ja er wolle gerne Kinder, aber es sei mit Mitte 40 vermutlich zu spät. Er wolle nicht aus dem Rollstuhl mit ihnen spielen. Er scherzt: Falls jetzt eine Frau in sein Leben treten würde, könnte diese nicht mal seine geschmacklosen Möbel rauswerfen, da er noch keine habe, in seinem neuen Haus. Sein Blick dabei verrät, dass es nie eine Frau gab, die sich für ihn interessierte und er nicht mehr daran glaubt, dass es eine geben könnte.

Man weiß nicht was leerer ist: Walts Haus oder Walt.
Selten habe ich etwas traurigeres gesehen.

Der zweite Hauptsatz der Computerpresse laut wohl leider: "Die Inkompetenz einer abgeschlossenen Redaktion bleibt konstant oder nimmt zu."

Dies zeigt sich exemplarisch an den (Print-) Publikationen des heise Verlags:

Die c't befindet sich qualitativ nach wie vor im freien Fall und zielt immer mehr auf ein Publikum ab, das sich am besten mit "Computer BILD Leser, die sich für etwas Besseres halten" umreissen läßt. Passenderweise greifen Specials ala "Wo kann ich Filmchen runterladen" und "Wo krieg ich krasse Homepage" um sich.

Die iX, die bisher als "Profi" Zeitschrift positioniert wurde, scheint sich im Abwärtsstrudel der c't zu verfangen: Lachhaft schlecht recherchierte Artikel, Redakteure die einen schon schlechten Text mit zusätzlichen Fehlern garnieren und andere Peinlichkeiten.

Und zu allem Überfluß läuft mir heute diese Werbung über den Weg:

Was bitte soll ich jetzt daraus schließen?
Das die iX sich jetzt primär an die krassen l33ts mit journaling filesystems wendet? Sorry, aber diese "Für den elitären Informationstechnik Profi Macho" Ästetik finde ich widerlich und lachhaft.

Vor einer Woche hätte ich nie geglaubt, daß Apple wirklich einen eigenen Browser entwickelt. Vorallem weil alle Gerüchte um das "Code Monster" Gekko kreisten. Dave Hyatt, ex-Chimera Entwickler, jetzt Safari-Entwickler, hat derweil den Namen seines Blogs von "Confessions of a Mozillian" in "Surfin' Safari" umbenannt. Gerüchtehalber hat sich Steve Jobs bei der Namensgebung von einem Beach Boys Song inspirieren lassen: (mpeg, 212 KB)

Die Zukunft von Apple ist nach dieser Macworld so klar wie nie: "Surfin' Safari", Powerbooks werden immer größer, man kooperiert mit Sportbekleidungsherstellern. Zusammen betrachtet ergibt sich ein ganz klares Bild: Apple wird Sportgerätehersteller und führt die Powerbookserie einer neuen Verwendung zu. Aus Cupertino-nahen Kreisen wurde uns ein Photo von Steve beim Prototypentest zugespielt.

Aber auch für traditionell eher unsportliche Geeks findet sich immer ein guter Grund zu einer Macworld zu pilgern. Moof Moof!
